On successful completion of the course learners will be able to:
• Identify the SCO hierarchy of standards, documents and procedures.
• State the types of safe systems within the risk hierarchy and risk-based approach to SCO.
• Identify the roles and responsibilities of specific individuals within SCO and the importance of communication.
• Identify how to monitor risk and manage change.
• State how to manage deviations/emergencies.
• Identify the requirements of records management, performance review and monitoring, audit and review.
• Identify SCO competency requirements.
• Identify SCO EUSR registration requirements.
The Safe Control of Operations (SCO) Renewal Training Programme – Module 1 (Core) provides learners with the knowledge and understanding required to refresh and maintain competence in the core principles of the safe control of operations when working on the UK gas network. The course delivers the training and assessment necessary to retain SCO registration on the Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR).
The programme reinforces understanding of the SCO framework, including the hierarchy of standards, documents, and procedures that underpin safe operational control. Learners revisit the risk-based approach to SCO and the application of appropriate safe systems of work, ensuring continued compliance with industry requirements and best practice.
Learners are guided through the roles and responsibilities of key individuals within the SCO process, with emphasis on effective communication, monitoring of risk, and the management of change. The course also refreshes knowledge on the management of deviations and emergency situations, alongside requirements for records management, performance monitoring, audit, and review.
Training is delivered through structured classroom-based theory sessions and trainer-led discussions, enabling learners to consolidate existing knowledge and remain current with SCO requirements. Assessment is achieved through a multiple-choice theory examination to confirm continued competence and understanding.
On successful completion, learners meet the renewal requirements for SCO Core and are eligible to retain EUSR SCO registration. Learners must hold the appropriate in-date SCO certification prior to attending this renewal module.
Registration is subject to renewal every five years, in line with EUSR and industry requirements.
All operatives and managers working on operational tasks within the Gas Networks, as well as specific Meter Installations, including those designated or expected to become Named Authorising Engineers or Named Competent Persons, is included. learners must hold SCO 1 & 2 plus GL/6 update or SCO core, still in date, prior to completing the training.
